As a mother of a non-verbal son with autism, I can personally attest to the invaluable role that his support workers at Abel U had in his life and their long last impacting on Rob and his overall functioning and wellbeing. Without their caring, kindness, understanding, patience but above all knowledge of his condition and personal commitment to getting to know and understand him better, he would not be the happy, sociable and well-adjusted adult he is today.

With their support, he was able to understand and participate in daily classroom routines and be comfortable participating in school gatherings and outings and be an active member of the community as much as possible. His Abel U CYW staff and their specific training contributed to his overall success.

They saw past his disability and saw his abilities as a unique individual with his own distinct personality and wonderful sense of humour. They were vital in helping to improve on his strengths and supporting his weaknesses throughout his journey in high school right up to transitioning to a day program at the age of 21.

Abel U staff a very important part of his successful move and were instrumental in helping the receiving day program staff understand how to best support him and have the best experience during his time there. He would have not have been able to participate and gain the meaningful experiences that he did without their presence and support. They saw him and not his condition and did their best to make him shine, in turn, he saw them as trusted and cherished friends! There is nothing more that a mother could ask for. I cannot thank them enough as Rob would not be the man he is today without them.
